Misha’s concentration was complete. He couldn’t see or think of anything beyond what he saw through his loupes and on the monitor to the right of him.

The stapes, all but its footplate, had been lifted free from its spot, and he was preparing it for the prosthesis. First, he drilled a precision hole in the footplate just large enough to accept the base of what looked like a tiny piston. This microprosthesis would transfer the vibrations that the stapes no longer could.

This was the moment of truth.

He was vaguely aware of someone swabbing sweat from his brow and temples but kept moving forward, trying his damnedest not to screw something up. His hand shifted for a millisecond, and he immediately stopped the drill, breathing a prayer that the size of the opening was correct.

He picked up the prosthesis with the pincers of his tool and slid it into place. It was snug but not too tight. It had to be able to move freely but without slipping through the hole he’d made.

On the other end of the prosthesis was a tiny C-clamp that he laid over the bone next to where the stapes had been and checked its position before pinching the ends of the clamp and securing it in place. He nudged either side of the piston and it had just enough give without falling from its new position. He stood there for a moment racking his brain for anything else he needed to check. But he’d done it all. And for now, it looked like Brody’s new prosthesis might just work.

He held his fingers up to no one in particular and crossed them in a sign of hope.

Because that’s all he could do right now. Hope. Hope he’d thought of everything. Hope that Brody’s body accepted its tiny new addition. And hope that everything would heal exactly as it should. Just like their trach patient had done.

Lindsey’s reaction that day still puzzled him. The way her hand had gone to her throat with a convulsive movement. The jolt of fear he thought he’d spotted in her face before she got control over herself. Her reaction afterward when he’d asked her about it.

Brittany’s words came back to him. “He almost ki...”

He almost what?

Not again. He didn’t need to start going through this again.

He finished up the final steps to surgery, checking things one last time.

There was no reason to think this wouldn’t be a complete success.

He blew out a breath to release the tension that had been building inside of him. “Okay. Let’s wake him up.”

The nursing staff shifted Brody so that he was face up on the bed once again while they reversed the medications that had kept him unaware and comfortable during surgery. Soon, a groggy patient was repeating his own name when prompted.

Misha moved himself into Brody’s line of sight. “It looks like everything went as planned. It’ll take a little time for everything to heal, but I think it’s been a success.” He touched the teen’s arm.
